Day 1: Hanoi - Overnight train to Sapa

Tonight you will be picked up at your hotel/ residence and transferred to Hanoi station by your private tour guide who will assist you with your check - in and escort you during your journey. The train departs approximately at 9:10pm. Enjoy some drinks at on-board restaurant before retiring to your cabin for a good night’s sleep. Overnight on A/C train.

Day 2: Arrival Lao Cai - Transfer to Sapa (B)

After early arrival at Lao Cai, a Chinese border town, we take a short, scenic drive on the winding road to Sapa (approx. 45 mins). Check into the hotel, freshen up and have breakfast. Later we start with a mini trek (app 3 hours) to the hill tribe villages of Cat Cat. As we walk through these villages nestled in the valleys below Sapa, we will meet some of the local ethnic minority people such as Black H’mong and Red Dzao. We also climb the Ham Rong (Dragon Jaw) Mountain for a panoramic view of Sapa town and the magnificent scenery of the surrounding area below. The remainder of the day is free to explore and experience the delights of Sapa or visit the colorful local markets. Overnight in Sapa town.

Day 3: Sapa – Walk to hill tribe villages – Home-hosted dinner (B, L, D)

After breakfast we take a short drive to Lao Chai village. From the main road, we commence the long walk down to the village inhabited by the community of Black H’mong minority. Lao Chai is situated in a wide valley and surrounded by rice paddies. During our walk, we will have the opportunity to visit a Black H’mong household and learn a little about their traditional way of life. At mid-day we will stop in a local restaurant on the riverside to enjoy our picnic lunch.   After lunch, we proceed for a further hour and a half, through local villages, and eventually reach the charming village of Tavan, home to the hill tribe group of Zay people. Here we will visit a Zay family where we will be treated a delicious dinner cooked and served by the family. Upon arrival we will enjoy a cup of tea and have a chat with the house owners, learn about their daily life, custom and practices. It is then free time to stroll around the villages. Later we turn to the family to have dinner. After dinner we bid a farewell to the family and walk to our awaiting vehicle to return Sapa.

Day 4: Sapa – Hanoi (B)

Free day in Sapa. An optional market day trip may be available. Depending on the day of the week, Bac Ha, home to the flower H’mong hill tribe minority people is open on Sunday; Can Cau on Saturday or Coc Ly on Tuesday. However you may choose to relax in Sapa town and enjoy the views, the wonderful shopping opportunities and local restaurants. Late afternoon we will drive back to Lao Cai to have dinner in a local restaurant before boarding an overnight train back to Hanoi. Overnight on A/C train Market options: Option 1: Cao Son - Wednesday Market. Enjoy a beautiful scenic drive to visit the Cao Son market. We take a dirt road which leads up into the mountains through the pine tree forests and villages that surround the tiny markets. Flower H'mong, Tu Di, Tay and Giay are ethnic minorities who come to trade local products such as food, agricultural supplies and fabric here. After exploring these markets our car will take us back to Muong Khuong for lunch. After lunch in a local restaurant we will visit the most secluded peaceful villages, and have the opportunity to observe traditional practices such as distilling wine from corn and making bacon. We will be offered a special corn cake when you stop by a local house. Option 2: Bac Ha - Sunday Market. Leaving Sapa we drive to Bac Ha market (approximately 3 hours). Arriving at Bac Ha, we visit the big market and the colorful ethnic people of the Flower H'mong, Phu La and Dao Tuyen minorities, who gather here to buy and sell their handicraft products. After spending the morning exploring the market our lunch will be served at a local restaurant. After lunch we drive downhill to start a short walk to Trung Do Village which is home to the Tay minority. Here we can visit a traditional Tay house. We will then travel by boat through amazing countryside to Bao Nhai Village. Option 3: Can Cau Market - Saturday market. We will take a 3 hour drive to Can Cau market.  Our journey will take us through the mountainous border area between Vietnam and China.  Situated 20 kilometres from Bac Ha, Can Cau is a small but very colorful market.  Opening only on Saturdays, it always delivers a very photogenic display of Flower Hmong, Nung and Phu La ethnic costumes. After spending the morning exploring the market, we will leave for Bac Ha town where we will have lunch.  From Bac Ha we drive downhill (1/2 hour) to start a short walk to Trung Do Village which belongs to the Tay minority. Have the opportunity to visit a traditional Tay house. We will then travel by boat through the amazing countryside to Bao Nhai Village. Option 4: Coc Ly Market – Tuesday market. Drive from Sapa (3hrs) to Coc Ly market situated between the stunning mountains by the Chay River. Every Tuesday morning, the people from the surrounding ethnic villages such as Flower H’mong, Phu La and Dao Tuyen gather to sell and buy their products. Having explored the market, we will have a boat trip to Flower H’mong village of Na Nen then trek to Trung Do village of Tay minority people. Enjoy a picnic lunch in a local house with the Tay people. From there we can travel by boat, down the river, and experience the magnificent sights surrounding the beautiful river banks. After the markets we are transferred back to Lao Cai station for our night train journey back to Hanoi. We can drop your bags at a local restaurant near the station where we can have dinner (not included) before boarding the train. Overnight on the air conditioned train.

Day 5: Hanoi

Arrive back to Hanoi station in the early morning and transfer to your hotel at the end of our amazing adventure.
